Chapters 1 to 5

Well, what did you think?

When I first read this book, I was so impatient to get past the first few chapters because I knew they were laying foundation for something really good.  I wanted to get to the good stuff.  And trust me, you're gonna get it in this next section!  We're increasing to 10 chapters per week!!  Thanks to everyone who voted.  Please feel free to check the blog throughout the week...I try to add new and interactive things every few days, to make it more fun.

In this first section, we learn that Earth, and almost all of its inhabitants, are occupied by a race of beings that refer to themselves as Souls.  These souls hop from planet to planet inserting themselves into the original planet's inhabitants, to experience life in a new way.  They fix any aspect of the planet they deem not suitable to their way of life, and then occupy it indefinitely.

Our lead character in this story is actually two people, Wanderer, the Soul implanted into Melanie, the host body.  We learn pretty early that Mel is a particularly strong Host, but Wanderer is exceptional herself, as she has more experience in more host bodies than most of her species.  We also learn that the other worlds Souls have inhabited don't include Hosts with the sense of smell or strong emotions.  Wanderer experiences hatred, which she's never felt before.  How would that affect the opposite emotion?

In this first section we see Wanderer and Mel just beginning to struggle against each other...I wonder what interesting things will come of that. ;)  We also see Wanderer trying to assimilate into her new life teaching while the irritating Seeker lays out her intentions of never stopping till she finds any other humans Mel was running with (Jamie & Jared).  Life in these host bodies is very different specifically for those who fill the calling of Seeker.  With the intense emotions that come with these bodies, Seekers have evolved into a more aggressive and ruthless sub group.  There's never been a division between Souls like the potential for it that exists on Earth.  All Souls have always been equal...before Earth.

We left off with Wanderer talking to her "Shrink" or Comforter about the unexpected complications she's having with the host body.

Now onto chapters 6-15.  Ahhhh, I can't wait for you to meet one particular character.  Edward Cullen, eat your heart out!!

Thanks for that summary. I try to go too deep and figure stuff out that might not really be that important in the first place. Your enthusiasm is carrying me along. I can sense a really powerful and cool struggle with Melanie and Wanderer. I'm assuming that these souls are gender neutral too - right? Not one particular sex?
I agree - the set up is really good. I find it interesting how honest they are with one another and how Wanderer can be so ipen with Comforter even when she doesn't want to be.

Caren, your question about if Souls have sexes is tricky. Souls have mothers and non-mothers; some can produce offspring and some cannot. But they don't mate. We'll actually hear a little about this in this weeks section of reading. That aspect of Souls, I think, is very touching and you'll get details on it much later in the book as Wanderer explains it.

Your explanation really helped me. As I've been reading I'm like, "Wait, is that right? Am I getting this?". I'm definitely interested in seeing how Wanderer and Melanie "fight" out there differences.

FINALLY, I'm getting into this book. I had a hard time at first, so, so very confused. At some point, I'll have to re-read the first part again,
Getting to where I don't want to put the book down and trying to sneak in reading moments while hiding in my room, or on the potty. :)
Les- you're right. Jared sounds so hunky, warm and perfect. Must be the werewolf in him. :)
Interesting that ANYONE would use a desert as a backdrop of their story.
When can we start talking more specifically about things without them being spoilers to everyone else? I have comments and questions galore.
Are there any pets/animals that exist now with the souls in charge?
Nighty night -

This is my third try to leave a comment. I thin I signed in 3 different ways! I can't find how to vote, but they are hiding out.

Sex: depends on the Host. Even seaweed, flowers, etc. reproduce. So, must be able to be all sexes in a Souls lifetime..however long that might be!

Have traveled the same AZ route. Papa use to tell us stories of there and even when he traveled with us! He use to live there a while as a teen. We RV camped near a mountain that's volcanic like that....awesome. I LOVE the setting, intriguing.

I hate the SEEKER assigned to Mel the Wanderer. I think Souls will try to take over and STAY on Earth as they all come to enjoy these sense-blessed bodies!

I'm looking forward to a sequel already, or there'd better be a fantastic finish! Jared is gonna be, I bet, a combo of Edward/Jacob.
